The style

What exactly is a Festbier?

Festbier is the golden, full-bodied lager brewed for the Munich Oktoberfest - noticeably stronger than an everyday Helles at 13.3–13.7 °Plato original wort and 5.8–6.3 % vol., yet pale, clean and famously drinkable. Since the 1970s it has largely replaced the darker Märzen as the beer actually poured in the tents.

One rule matters for buyers: only beer brewed within Munich’s city limits may be called Oktoberfestbier and served at the festival itself. Exactly six breweries qualify - Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner and Spaten. This range carries every one of them, plus two Freising Festbiers from breweries founded in 1040 and 1160 - the glasses locals reach for when the tents close.

Producing this typical German-style Festbier is a core competence of the ancient Augustiner brewery, right from Bavaria’s capital - the brewery most respected by Munich’s own beer drinkers. Its Oktoberfestbier pours light golden and is slightly hoppy, grainy and citrusy on the nose.

The taste is malty and bready with a smooth, notable hoppy finish.

The beer tastes remarkably clean and balanced - despite arriving at 6.3 % vol., one of the strongest numbers in our whole selection.

Hacker-Pschorr’s Oktoberfestbier is genuinely special: it is by far the darkest of them all - amber, nearly dark bronze - because the master brewers take a little more Münchner malt into the mash.

The result is a nearly honey-like beverage that finishes sweet, malty and utterly creamy. Cheers!

The two insiders from the beer city

Freising is our home town. BBB’s office and showroom sit minutes from these two brewhouses - our team trained on the Weihenstephan hill - so these are the crates we know best, and the ones Munich insiders order when the tents close.

Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan is the world’s oldest brewery, founded in 1040. The old monastery brewhouse sits in Freising - the beer city - where Bavaria’s Best Beer keeps its own office and showroom.

The Festbier pours very fine and light golden, balanced and sweet on the nose. The taste is clean, typical and full-bodied, with hints of honey, sweet grass and grain.

Not to be confused with HB München: the Hofbrauhaus Freising is also one of the oldest breweries in the world, founded in the year 1160. Its Festbier shows dark yellow in the glass under a fine-pored, strong head.

It tastes of grains, honey and bread - yet stays very clean and crisp at the same time. A textbook Festbier and an excellent interpretation of the style: the insiders’ tip.

Three bottle types - one thing to check

Euro bottle

The compact classic of the German returnable pool - high shoulder, sturdy stance, fully container-proof.

Augustiner · Spaten

NRW bottle

The tall, slender standard - the workhorse of Bavarian bottling lines, equally container-proof.

Hofbräu · Löwenbräu · Paulaner · Weihenstephaner · HB Freising

Swing-top bottle

Clip closure with ceramic stopper. Charismatic on the shelf - but we do not recommend it for ocean containers.

Planning a deep-sea container? Keep Hacker-Pschorr for your road- or short-sea-served markets and fill the ocean box with the other seven - we will flag this automatically on every offer.

Festbier buying FAQ

What is the difference between Oktoberfestbier and Festbier?+

Oktoberfestbier is a protected designation: only beer brewed within Munich’s city limits - by Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner or Spaten - may carry the name and be poured at the festival. Festbier is the style itself, and outstanding examples are brewed elsewhere in Bavaria too, such as the Weihenstephaner and Hofbrauhaus Freising Festbiers in this range.

How strong is Festbier compared with regular Bavarian lager?+

Festbier is brewed to a higher original wort of 13.3–13.7 °Plato, which lands it at 5.8–6.3 % vol. - noticeably above an everyday Helles. Across this range, Hofbräu München is the strongest at 6.3 % and the colour spans 6 to 19 EBC.

Can I mix several breweries in one container?+

Yes - that is the point of this range. All eight beers ship in the identical crate format (20 × 0.5 L, 40 × 30 cm, 40 crates per Euro pallet), so a mixed pallet stacks exactly like a single-brand one. You can mix down to a single crate per variety; the minimum order is two pallets, and a full 20 ft container takes 440 crates.

Why can’t Hacker-Pschorr go into an ocean container?+

Hacker-Pschorr bottles its Oktoberfestbier in swing-top bottles with a clip closure. We do not recommend that closure for long ocean transits, so we quote this beer for road- and short-sea-served markets and recommend the other seven beers for deep-sea containers. Every offer we send flags this automatically.

What is the difference between Euro, NRW and swing-top bottles?+

All three are 0.5 L returnable German glass standards. The Euro bottle is shorter with a high shoulder (Augustiner, Spaten here); the NRW bottle is the taller, slimmer standard used by the other breweries; the swing-top adds a ceramic clip closure (Hacker-Pschorr). The type matters mainly for shelf presentation, deposit handling and - in the swing-top case - ocean-freight suitability.

When do I need to order for the 2026 season?+

We load within 7 days of a confirmed order, so the deadline is set by sailing time to your port. As a guide for shelf availability through to the Wiesn finale on 4 October 2026: Australia/New Zealand by the end of June, Japan/Korea and South America by early July, Hong Kong/Southeast Asia and Southern Africa by mid-July, Canada by mid-August, and the UK by early September.

Missed the window? It is far less critical than it looks - Oktoberfestbier sells to the end of October, and we keep loading throughout. Ask us and we will find the fastest routing available.

What does FCA Freising mean?+

Under Incoterms 2020 FCA (Free Carrier) Freising, we hand your export-cleared goods to your nominated carrier at our loading point in Freising, Bavaria. All export documents, including Certificates of Origin, are prepared in-house. Door delivery and freight arrangements can be quoted on request.
